As entrepreneurs, we are no strangers to overwhelm and exhaustion. When things start piling up, our never-ending to-do list starts taking away from the joy that had originally sparked our entrepreneurial spirit. 

To fix this and get our fire burning again, we must accept that we can’t do everything, but letting go as a business owner can be a daunting task to say the least.

By doing this, you can renew your passion, increase your business’s capacity, and focus your energy forward rather than staying stagnant.

Let go of control

The first step of this process, letting go of control, is arguably the hardest. So, if you find yourself struggling here, know that you are not alone. Trust me when I tell you, though, that coming to this realization is a huge accomplishment for not only your mental health, but the health of your business. 

Accept Help

Once you have let go and come to accept that you do not need to be in this alone, look around you and see who is waiting with outstretched arms. Maybe you’ve noticed them before and maybe you haven’t, but you have a community of friends, family, and supporters who are offering to offload some of your work. Take them up on their offers! You are not burdening them, they want to see you succeed.

    Delegate

    Got some tasks that are not serving you anymore but that are essential for the vitality of your business? Get someone else to do them! There is always someone else who can do it, and once you have let go of control, you are able to see that there are qualified people out there who are hungry for the opportunity to take this work off your hands. Consider hiring additional employees, freelancers, contractors, or agencies depending on the scope of your needs. All these exist so that you can get down to business and focus on what is at the core of your business.

    Grow into the person you want to become

    This is the step that we have all been waiting for. You have let go of control, taken people up on their offers to help you, delegated time-consuming tasks, and now you get to focus on you. What is it that you really want? Do you want to be out there getting more clients? Do you want to explore new markets? Expand your services? With this weight off your shoulders and more time on your hands, this is when the beauty happens and you get to play.

    Hey, hey Mavericks. Welcome to the show. I hope you are excited for today's episode, I am very excited to share this with you. And today we're talking about this thought this idea that someone else can do it. So this idea is something that has given me so much freedom and peace of mind over the years. And it's really helped me to continue growing into who I want to be. And spending probably a lot less time than I would have staying stuck in old identities, old patterns, and even old businesses that no longer fit me. So what we're really talking about, this idea of "someone else can do it" is letting go of control, letting go of control of something that you think you should - or something that you think you can control. And it's also about thinking abundantly, which is what you need in order to be able to let go of that control. So as entrepreneurs, there are a couple of ways I want to share it that this might be applying in your life and in your business. 

    The first one is with delegation. So delegation is taking something off of your plate and giving it to someone else, literally saying "someone else can do this". So in business, this is often going to be someone that you pay to do things. But it also means letting the people who are in your life to help you actually help you. 

    So I have a great example of this. Someone recently came to me and she was struggling to make time to work on her book. So she has young kids. And that means her work time is limited as it is. And she's when she is trying to work. She's being constantly interrupted by small kids, right. So of course, that's going to be challenging to focus and get a whole lot done. It's very difficult to write when you're being constantly interrupted. So one of the things that she had tried was to have her husband watch the kids for a few hours. I think they were trying to do this every weekend for a couple hours every weekend. And it just wasn't going well because he wasn't doing it right. And so he didn't feed the kids properly. He was letting them watch TV when they were outside. They were being noisy, it really was not a helpful situation for her at all. So she spent her writing time instead of you know, feeling focused and inspired. She spent her writing time thinking about the next snacks that the kids were going to eat and whether or not they were in front of the TV when it was too quiet. Right, you know that - you know that feeling? It's a little too quiet. So she was not writing, she was being very concerned while her husband was trying to help her and watch the kids. 

    And the thing is, as much as I can sympathize and relate to the frustration of just wishing that someone would listen and do things my way. She ain't gonna win that battle, right? In order to let him help her with the kids, she needed to let go of her need to control him and the way that he parents their children. I know that this is such a challenging topic, especially when it comes to parenting, that's probably the - like, the biggest controversy that we'll ever have on the show is when it comes to parenting. But, here's the truth. In this situation, the kids were not in danger, everything was truly okay. And when she could get past her idea of how he should be doing it, how he should be parenting their children, and accept the help and put her attention instead, on her project, that's where all the freedom is. So this idea of someone else can do it allows you to receive help when you need it. Obviously, you need to choose the help in your life wisely, right, you don't want to put people in charge who are not up to the task. However, if you start with this way of thinking, and you are willing to let go of needing to control the situation or control how they help you, then you can start to position yourself to make really solid choices about who and when, and how you want to delegate important things in your life and in your business. So delegation is one way as an entrepreneur that we need to start allowing ourselves to receive help and acknowledging that someone else can do it. 

    Another place that I see this is when it comes to saying no to ill-fitting opportunities. So most frequently, I see this with things like timing. So a great opportunity comes at a really bad time. Or I see it with the - what I call the "square peg, round hole" opportunities, these are the things that we really want to be right, they sound so good in some ways, or they look great on paper. But they really aren't right for us. So in these situations, this idea that someone else can do it is your permission slip to pass, right. So I'm going to take this a step further and say that not only can someone else do it, but there is someone out there right now, who was made for this opportunity. There's someone out there who has been wishing for this opportunity to be available for them. Maybe the timing is perfect for them. Maybe they've been working on becoming the person who is ready for this opportunity. Maybe they've been working on their confidence, their portfolio, their skill set, and they're really ready to step into a new level of their business. And you have outgrown that level. 

    So pass it along, someone else can do it. Or maybe they have a specific skill set. That's something that you dread. You can do it might be easy for you, maybe you even make a lot of money at it. But the truth is, you don't love doing it. And they do, someone else can do it. I love this way of thinking, I actively spend time thinking about things like this, whenever I come across a task that is pretty "eugh" for me, I think about how awesome it is that there is someone out there who enjoys doing it. This is the abundant thinking of letting go in order to make opportunity for someone else. And this is true for every task in your business. It doesn't mean that you have to delegate or let it go. But it gives you permission to be thinking forward instead of staying in the same position because you can or think you should. 

    So I have an example. I know that I've shared this before. But before I went full time into my coaching practice, I used to run a creative agency. This was my pride and joy, my baby, for nine years. And I worked so hard to shape that business to fit me as best it possibly could. And they still outgrew it. And I will never forget this day when I was in a meeting with one of my clients and their clients. So I used to sort of rep my clients as their creative director. So sometimes, I would take meetings for them. Other times we would all be in meetings together. And I loved my clients so much. I felt very protective of them and their business. I wanted the absolute best for my client. But there was no question for me then that I wasn't lit-up passionate about my work the way that I had been in earlier years. I was already coaching and that's really what I wanted to be doing. I wanted to be coaching. I was excited and passionate about that. And I was continuing to do this work because I was good at it, it made good money, I had an established business for lots of reasons, right? 

     

    So we showed up to this meeting. And I got to meet their project manager for the first time and she was so excited to be there. She was really engaged in the whole process and eager to learn and excited to, like, take ideas and ran with them. And it reminded me of how I had felt in previous years about that same kind of work. And in that moment, I saw, I really truly saw that there were other people in the world who not only could do this but desperately wanted to, they were so hungry for it. And I felt sort of like a senior looking at the freshman class coming in. And you know, she was newer in her career, she was newer to this work than I was, of course, that makes sense, right. But it almost felt like this passing of the torch that was so symbolic that it was the kind of permission that I needed to give myself to let someone else really take that. So I knew that my clients really deserve to have someone who was in that same frame of mind, be the one running their projects be the one generating new creative ideas. And I wanted to put the whole of my passion into my coaching business where it currently lived, right. So that was really a big turning point for me, so to see someone else who could do it, and to believe that it was better for everyone that we would all benefit, we would all win if I were able to move forward and create that space for someone else who wanted it.

    So how I did that, and what that transition looked like - that's a whole other story. I think I've talked a little bit about that on the show before. But that could be a whole other podcast episode. But what this really comes down to is this belief that someone else can do it gives us opportunity to grow into what we want next. Because things don't have to be bad or wrong, in order to let them go. You can let something go simply because someone else can do it. And you want to give your energy to something else. We often think that we need problems to precede endings, but we don't. But when we want or think that we have to hold on to things, we will often create those problems, or we will break stuff to help us justify letting it go. But you don't have to do that because someone else can do it. You are free to accept help in your life, you are free to let go of things that don't fit you right anymore. And you are free to explore and grow into the person that you want to become because we do live in this abundant world and there is always someone else who can do it. 

    So I hope that this episode has been helpful. I hope you've enjoyed a little bit of insight into what this looks like as an entrepreneur. And I hope that you will take this idea and apply it however it makes the most sense in your life. So think about this. What are you doing right now? Because you think you should because you think you have to because you aren't willing to let go of the control?
